I stopped by to visit a former client and her baby a couple of weeks ago...it is so much fun to see my babies again! This one is about eight months old now and still has the longest eyelashes and a very bold personality.
A doula (from a greek word meaning "woman's servant") is a person who provides physical and emotional support during labor and birth. Doulas do not provide medical assistance, but work to ensure the comfort and happiness of the laboring woman using backrubs, accupressure, meditations, breathing coaching, positioning, and other aids.
Studies show that the presence of a doula can shorten labor, reduce the number of interventions, and produce a better experience for the mother and her partner.
A good doula will not take the place of a partner, but enhance their role by taking some of the pressure off! The doula can remind them of techniques learned in childbirthing classes, answer questions and provide information, and help see to the mother's physical comfort so that the partner is free to give the mother loving emotional support that no one else can offer.
